Only recently have some genuine “nude cheats” emerged, but neither really counts in my opinion. Lara Croft was the one most dogged by this, with breathless teenage boys swearing to each other that you really could make Lara Croft’s clothes vanish with the right cheat code, but the legend has appeared for pretty much every female game character. Over the years, lots of games have been rumoured to have a “nude mode”, generally those with an attractive female protagonist. Weirdly, though, it makes some of the platforming sections feel like a cartoony version of Mirror’s Edge. Apart from the viewpoint, the game plays much the same, though the restricted view can make it very hard to see what’s going on. The right combination of button presses at the loading screen for any level will make Mario’s viewpoint switch to first person perspective, shooting star bits like bullet from a gun. In the standard game, Mario can collect “star bits”, which he can either stash to earn rewards and buy access to bonus levels, but you can also point the Wii Remote at enemies and shoot star bits at them. Apparently one of these was an option to switch the familiar 3D platforming view with what was essentially a first person shooter view. One rumour I heard, though, was that some of the experiments never made it into the released game. The final result certainly demonstrated that, with a joyous collection of flying, skating, jumping, swimming, racing and exploring. Before the original Super Mario Galaxy was released, I heard that Nintendo was using it to experiment with a wide range of new playing styles and mechanics.
